Vaccinations and prevention

This page helps you understand the vaccination schedule your puppy starts with, what your veterinarian will continue, and how to keep records organized for the first year.

Core vaccination schedule

Your puppy will arrive with age-appropriate vaccines already administered. Your veterinarian will complete the remaining series based on your puppy's age at pickup.

6 to 8 weeks

  • First DHPP combination vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus)
  • Initial de-worming treatment
  • These are typically completed before your puppy leaves our care

10 to 12 weeks

  • Second DHPP booster
  • Bordetella (kennel cough) if recommended by your vet
  • Continue de-worming on schedule

14 to 16 weeks

  • Final DHPP booster in the puppy series
  • Rabies vaccine (timing varies by state law)
  • Discuss leptospirosis and Lyme based on your region

Parasite prevention

Parasites are one of the most preventable health threats for young puppies. Your veterinarian will recommend products based on your geographic area and lifestyle.

  • Continue de-worming and fecal testing as directed by your vet.
  • Start heartworm prevention by 8 to 12 weeks of age, depending on your vet's recommendation.
  • Discuss flea and tick prevention products that are safe for puppies.
  • Avoid over-the-counter products unless approved by your veterinarian.
  • Check for ticks after outdoor activity, especially in wooded or grassy areas.
  • Keep your yard clean and free of standing water to reduce parasite exposure.

Recordkeeping

Organized records make veterinary visits smoother and ensure nothing is missed during the critical first year.

  • Bring the breeder folder to every veterinary appointment.
  • Keep vaccination dates, lot numbers, and product names together in one place.
  • Contact your vet immediately for any concerning vaccine reaction (lethargy, swelling, vomiting).
  • Request copies of all vet records and add them to your puppy's folder.
  • Set calendar reminders for upcoming boosters and annual wellness exams.
